  • After the ten-bell salute to Hulk Hogan, the show started with Logan Paul insulting his hometown of Cleveland, and telling the fans he’d give a special episode of Impaulsive in the ring. He started to mock Jelly Roll, who he’ll be facing at this year’s SummerSlam. Jelly Roll appeared and told Paul that he’d never faced any adversity in his life, and that he was getting in the ring to show bullies like him that he wouldn’t let them win. Shortly after Drew McIntyre appeared in the ring, Randy Orton appeared to back up Jelly Roll and the four faced off. The four are scheduled to have a tag team match together on Night 1 of SummerSlam.
  • Chelsea Green spoke with Cathy Kelley after Kelley’s segment with Jade Cargill, and had a few things to say about her. Cargill attacked Green through the backstage area, with Cargill carrying her through the entryway and to the ring. This set up an impromptu match between the two.
  • Cody Rhodes came to the ring to talk about his upcoming Street Fight rules match against John Cena for the WWE Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam. Rhodes says that he needs to know that Cena’s story was real, and that he’s willing to go the distance with the real John Cena.
  • Jacob Fatu’s promo was interrupted by The Miz, who told him they had a match for tonight. Miz slapped Fatu, who then told Miz to “come on with it”.
  • The Wyatt Sicks match ended after Nikki Cross pulled the referee out of the ring, causing a DQ finish. Through the remainder of the show, the entire men’s SmackDown tag team division entered the ring in a melee that ended with SmackDown GM Nick Aldis declaring a TLC match for the Tag Team Championships at SummerSlam.

Author and journalist Marc Raimondi spoke with The Sportster about Hulk Hogan’s legacy and the longevity of the nWo in the culture and in society.

WWE’s tribute package was a touching one, narrated by WWE Chief Creative Officer Triple H, focusing primarily on Hogan’s career. Much has been discussed regarding Hogan’s legacy and the realities of his life over the past 24 hours, and WWE chose to honor his contributions to the business while avoiding the more uncomfortable parts of his legacy.

Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena: Their Swan Song Blowoff?

The Feud Feels Less Important Than Before

A match with the biggest build but the least impressive payoff at WrestleMania 41, John Cena’s record-breaking 17th championship win over Cody Rhodes felt less than major. Without the massive component of The Rock to help elevate and set the feud off, the build to their rematch felt lackluster and rudderless.

Rhodes is doing his best to carry the feud through SummerSlam, as Cena will not appear on WWE programming until Night 2. Without The Rock reportedly not returning anytime soon, and reportedly without Travis Scott moving forward, WWE might need a miracle to stick the landing on this heel turn, hopefully giving us some clue as to why he sold his soul to the Final Boss.

Zelina Vega Begins A New, Darker Persona

Challenging Giulia Next Week For Her Championship Rematch

Since her loss to Giulia, and with the loss of her Women’s United States Championship, on the June 27th episode of SmackDown, Zelina Vega has quietly begun a darker turn in her character work. Vega has been posting darker posts on her social media page since her loss, indicating a different approach in her attempt to win back her title.

Vega’s character work within WWE after her championship win grew exponentially, and her attempt to return to the gold against Giulia will likely continue to breed the darker elements of her personality. We’ll have to wait and see whether she regains her championship, but we’re enjoying this new twist, hopefully with more darkness to come.
