Summary
- WWE is building a loaded Wrestlepalooza card: Cody vs. McIntyre and Cena vs. Lesnar planned.
- Wrestlepalooza marks WWE’s ESPN DTC debut.
- WWE and AEW collide Sept 20: All Out vs. Wrestlepalooza – fans win with stacked cards.
It appears that WWE is putting out all the stops for its first PLE on ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer service. According to Dave Meltzer on this past Tuesday’s episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is planning a “loaded show” for Wrestlepalooza, and that includes a title match.
Another Main Event-Worthy Match Revealed For Wrestlepalooza
As noted, it was already suggested before that John Cena would be facing Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza, but according to Meltzer, that’s not the only main event-worthy match. Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is set to defend his title against Drew McIntyre. He said:
“They want the loaded show. So Cody [Rhodes] vs. [Drew] McIntyre is going to be on that show. And [John] Cena vs. Brock Lesnar is going to be on that show. I don’t know if the Stephanie Vaquer match will be on that show or on that ‘Raw,’ but I do know that Indianapolis show, the plan is to do a very loaded show that night.” (h/t: WrestlingInc)
Also on the episode, Meltzer implied that WWE basically put more thought and dedication into Wrestlepalooza than Clash in Paris. The PLE is the company’s last main roster PLE to stream on Peacock, but WWE seems more worried about Wrestlepalooza.
WWE and AEW Go Head To Head
WWE is probably going crazy with its card because this will be the first time that a main roster PLE has gone against an AEW pay-per-view. Wrestlepalooza — which is September 20 — is the same day as the AEW All Out PPV at Toronto’s Scotiabank Center.
All Out’s card is also coming together. During this past Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Christian Cage and Adam Copeland (WWE Hall of Famer Edge) challenged FTR for a match at All Out. It was only recently that the two started to team together again. Forbidden Door marked the first time that Cage and Copeland teamed together in 14 years. So those nostalgic for the Attitude Era are definitely enjoying that reunion. A win for AEW!
Also, Darby Allin has challenged Death Riders leader Jon Moxley for a match. It’s not confirmed yet if the match will be on the card. Will it mimic the Lights Out Steel Cage Match at Forbidden Door? Probably. A clip of Mox stabbing a bloody Allin with a fork has been making its rounds on social media.
The same day as Forbidden Door was the WWE NXT Heatwave PLE. So, as stated before, it’s not the first time the two giants have crossed paths. It’s just always been an NXT event. Who will win on September 20? Wrestling fans, because each promotion will be giving their best product, and that’s always a win for fans.
