Is Alex Pereira preparing for a move to heavyweight?
Having already captured UFC titles at light heavyweight and middleweight, it would surprise no one if “Poatan” changed weight classes one more time to become the first three-division champion. In a video posted to Instagram, Pereira shared a weight check-in in which he came in at almost 244 pounds.
Watch that clip below.
Pereira has had to weigh in at 185 pounds and at 205 pounds for his previous championship appearances, which is what makes his current walk-around weight so alarming. However, due to Pereira not being in fight camp (at least, as far as anyone knows), it’s likely that he’ll be much closer to the 205-pound limit should a light heavyweight bout be booked for him in the near future.
Following his title fight loss to Magomed Ankalaev this past March at UFC 313, the possibility of an immediate rematch has been discussed due to Pereira’s three successful defenses and his massive popularity. Nothing has been announced for Ankalaev nor Pereira at the moment.
Should Pereira venture up to heavyweight, he’d be favored to receive an immediate shot at interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. With undisputed champion Jon Jones currently missing in action, a Pereira vs. Aspinall fight is the biggest heavyweight bout the UFC can deliver and could potentially help bring order to the division.
