Triple H has a lot of qualities when it comes to being a booker. He has done a lot of good for the product ever since taking over the creative after Vince McMahon’s retirement. Initially, Triple H was regarded as the favorite booker of the internet wrestling community. But as time went on, people started realizing that The Game’s booking philosophy isn’t perfect. Some of the fan favorites were sidelined in favor of other stars who weren’t as popular among the fans. Babyface champions struggled to keep their momentum up. Tag teams felt like an afterthought. These were just some of the problems with Triple H’s booking.

10 Biggest Problems With Triple H’s WWE Booking
WWE has improved tremendously under Triple H’s creative direction, but he still has some problems with his booking.
He does get a lot of things right, however. For example, he can tell long-term stories in a compelling way. He has made stars like LA Knight and Chelsea Green relevant again. But right now, there’s still one major problem with Triple H’s booking that has started to frustrate fans more and more. It happened at the most recent premium live event, Backlash, as well.
Triple H Is Too Consistent With His Booking Pattern
It’s A Drastically Different Approach Compared To Vince McMahon’s Booking
- Many Triple H storylines drag on for too long.
- WWE has been teasing a breakup between Austin Theory and Grayson Waller for months.
- Vince McMahon often changed scripts and storylines.
One of the major criticisms surrounding Triple H’s booking is that it’s often too predictable, long, and boring. While predictability isn’t a major issue as long as the build-up is executed properly, a lot of the time, things feel a bit too slow, and some storylines tend to drag on forever. Take Austin Theory vs. Grayson Waller, for instance: Waller is clearly not an ally to Theory, and yet their storyline has them still as tag partners. Theory has been getting face reactions from fans, but if Triple H waits too long, fans will stop caring about Theory.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Triple H’s booking follows a pattern. He is different from Vince McMahon, who’d regularly change scripts and deviate from the original story. It created a lot of inconsistencies, and fans hated it. But with Triple H, he keeps everything a bit too consistent in his booking, and this is where predictability becomes an issue.

Many WWE PLEs Have Suffered From The Same Overbooking Mess
WWE Backlash Ended In A Similar Way To WrestleMania 41
- Many of the recent PLEs had one theme in common: outside appearances.
- Fans talked more about these shenanigans rather than the match itself.
- Backlash, for instance, saw multiple ref bump spots and interference from R-Truth.
One wouldn’t even have to go too far in the past to notice this pattern. Take the last three premium live events, for instance. At Elimination Chamber, John Cena won the match to become the number one contender for the Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship. Right after that, The Rock came out to get Cody’s answer. Then Cena turned heel. To this date, nobody knows why Cena needed The Rock’s help. He had already won at Elimination Chamber, albeit with little help from Seth Rollins. But The Rock didn’t even show up after the Elimination Chamber to help Cena in any way. Instead, we got Travis Scott. This was the fans’ biggest gripe with Night 2 of WrestleMania. Where was The Rock? Why was Travis Scott interfering when he’s not even a wrestler?
And then there’s Backlash. The match between Orton and Cena wasn’t anything special; it only felt special because the last time these two wrestlers faced each other was in 2019. Shenanigans were bound to happen. One referee bump wasn’t enough, so WWE did two more. And then we had everyone backstage come out to the ring for an RKO party. The focus was no longer on their match. And right when the bout continued again, R-Truth showed up all of a sudden and caused an interference. After that, the match ended as it did at WrestleMania. Cena used a low-blow and hit Orton on the head with his belt to win. Notice that there’s a pattern again.

Triple H Needs To Book His Heel Champions Properly
Heels Rely Too Much On Distractions To Retain Their Titles
- John Cena retained his WWE Title in the same fashion for the second time.
- This has caused many fans to joke about how a belt shot has become his new finisher.
- Triple H needs to allow his heels to win clean sometimes as well.
Heel champions in WWE are dominant enough to have long title reigns, but despite how strong they’re portrayed on television, things change once the bell rings. Even Roman Reigns needed help from other people to retain his belt most of the time. It felt boring then, and it feels boring now. Most PLEs where the heel World Champion wins turn into an overbooked mess with referee bumps and interferences for the sake of protecting the babyface wrestler. This has become a new pattern where World Title matches can’t end without multiple shenanigans.

Cena has already won two main event matches with his low blow and a title shot to the face combo. Many fans are already complaining about the lack of finishers ending his matches, but if this happens again, like The Bloodline interfering in Reigns’ matches, that would become problematic. John Cena’s matches would become predictable and boring. Before this happens, Triple H will need to switch things up and fix this booking pattern.
