Tommy Dreamer has given his thoughts on Paul Heyman mentioning him on RAW after the WWE Hall of Famer confused fans while paying tribute to the ECW legend.
RAW took place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is the same city that was the birthplace of ECW. Paul Heyman hyped up a Street Fight between Bron Breakker and Jey Uso by recalling some of the biggest names in ECW history.
Tommy Dreamer was one of those named by Heyman, although he had fans fear the worst:
“In the name of New Jack, the only real gangsta, in the name of the late great Sabu innovating moves, in the name of the late great Tommy Dreamer.”
There was a collective gasp amongst fans in attendance before Heyman explained:
“No, I know he’s not dead, but he should be.”
Breakker could be heard asking Heyman ‘he’s still alive?’ as fans laughed, but there were some taken aback by the apparent tribute. Dreamer’s name was mentioned along with Sabu and New Jack, two ECW icons who had passed away.
Dreamer responded to the buzz surrounding the promo and answered fans’ queries over any possible bad blood:
“Hey, I was trending number 3, it was RAW, Bengals, and me, which was cool — I think that’s awesome.”
The 54-year-old shared a hilarious GIF on the night of the quote, “Is it better to be loved or feared?” from the Hollywood movie ‘A Bronx Tale’. While Dreamer and Heyman didn’t always see eye-to-eye during ECW’s rise and fall, they shared enormous respect for one another.
Tommy Dreamer To Appear At WWE Wrestlepalooza?
It might not be too long until the pair encounter one another again on WWE TV after previously sharing a hug at Heyman’s induction at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in April 2024. That was the last time the former 14-time Hardcore Champion appeared in the Stamford-based promotion.
WWE are set to revive ECW PPV ‘Wrestlepalooza’ as their September 20 PLE and have it go up against AEW’s All Out. Two matches seem to be in the pipeline, with Cody Rhodes expected to defend his WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre, and John Cena to do battle with the returning Brock Lesnar.
The decision to bring the PPV back has received mixed responses because many feel it’s just a tactic to counter-program AEW. But done right, it could pay homage to ECW and some of the heroes who made the land of extreme such a unique promotion, including Dreamer.
The Innovator of Violence main-evented Wrestlepalooza in 1997, defeating Raven to put an end to their lengthy feud. It could be a golden opportunity for WWE to replicate their ‘Loser Leaves ECW’ match by concluding the Seth Rollins and CM Punk rivalry.
