Things We Learned From ‘WWE: Unreal’: Episode 5, “WrestleMania”

WWE: Unreal has been an eye-opening series for wrestling fans, and Netflix saved the best until last with the fifth and final episode of season one. The entire episode focused on WWE‘s WrestleMania 41, providing a backstage look at the two-night event and the emotional rollercoaster that accompanied it. The episode followed the various wrestlers who had been featured throughout the series and how their storylines culminated at the Grandest Stage of Them All. There were some very surprising aspects to this episode, which was jam-packed with drama and shocking situations that are guaranteed to have the entire business talking.

  • Jey Uso had been struggling in the build up to WrestleMania.
  • He was getting gassed out during matches and making mistakes.
  • Triple H had to light a fire under him.

One of the most shocking aspects of this episode was that WWE management was genuinely questioning Jey Uso’s performances heading into WrestleMania 41, and whether he was capable of being the World Heavyweight Champion. A meeting was held to discuss the situation, which led to Triple H issuing a warning to Jey.

He made it clear to the former Bloodline star that winning the title wasn’t guaranteed, and he needed to step up. Jey was getting gassed out at the time during his matches, which is something he was open about, but fortunately, he put in the work to turn things around and get his big moment.

It was interesting to see, because at the time when Jey ended up botching a few moves, the WWE Universe started to question him as well. This episode demonstrated that management was aware of the situation and did their best to address it head-on.

Tiffany Stratton Was Taught An Important Lesson

  • This promo with Charlotte Flair got very personal.
  • Stratton admitted to going off script on SmackDown.
  • Flair was rattled by the WWE Universe’s reaction to her.

Another big talking point during the build to WrestleMania 41 was the storyline between Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton. It didn’t go to plan as they weren’t on the same page, and that was clear during their infamous promo segment where Stratton made comments about the Queen having been divorced several times.

It was awkward in the moment, with the promo exchange proving to be a disaster. This episode allowed fans to see the backstage reaction to this, where it was revealed to Triple H that Flair was upset about the situation.

Triple H wasn’t impressed either, as he made it clear that Stratton needed to be taught that they don’t do that in WWE and that she had to apologize to Flair personally.

Michael Hayes Was Heavily Praised

  • Hayes believes he gets his creative ideas from God.
  • Seth Rollins thought the match with Roman Reigns and CM Punk was an “all-timer”
  • Hayes was heavily praised by everyone backstage for his producing skills.

Michael Hayes is a veteran producer in WWE, having helped put together countless matches over the years. That includes the WrestleMania 41 night one main event, which was an incredible triple threat between CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins.

Hayes was given lots of praise for what he was able to create in that match, with people going out of their way to let him know. Becky Lynch and Triple H were verbally proud of him, while Hayes himself thought that fans bought into everything they tried.

Paul Heyman even told Hayes that it was him at his best, showing that everyone was impressed by what the WWE Hall of Famer was able to create with his unique mind for the business.

  • Cena has openly spoken about slowing down inside the ring.
  • Age and diminished skills are the reasons why he’s retiring from WWE.
  • Cena was praised for his performance against Cody Rhodes.

John Cena made history at WrestleMania 41, breaking the record for the most World title wins in WWE history after defeating Cody Rhodes. They had an entertaining singles match, although Triple H admitted it was different from the previous main event on night one. However, both men were praised for how they engaged the audience.

Rhodes expected the match to be like an away game for him, as he presumed that the WWE Universe would boo him and be behind Cena. While he made it clear beforehand that it didn’t matter, the fans didn’t end up that way and were simply just into what they saw.

One interesting detail that many fans might’ve missed was a quick comment that Cena made to Triple H post-match. Triple H was praising Cena for the match when the champion admitted that was his top speed, making it clear that he’s unable to work any faster at this stage.

CM Punk Got Emotional At WWE WrestleMania 41

  • Michael Hayes told Triple H that Punk was getting emotional.
  • The feeling of headlining WrestleMania for the first time meant a lot to him.
  • It showcased Punk’s genuine passion for wrestling.

The most interesting aspect of the fifth episode of WWE: Unreal was seeing how emotional CM Punk got about headlining WrestleMania 41. It’s common knowledge how hard he worked for it, but seeing him cry in Gorilla Position really drove home the message of how much it truly meant.

It was good to see that Punk really cared, but the real takeaway was that he made it clear that it meant a lot to him that Triple H knew he was a main event star, as their conversation showed just how far their relationship had evolved.

Even after the match, Punk wanted to get Triple H’s verdict on the match, hoping that he liked what he saw. It’s a totally different side of Punk that fans never get to see, which is what made WWE: Unreal so interesting.
