Shubman Gill set to miss Duleep Trophy due to illness, Ankit Kumar to lead North Zone

According to reports, India skipper Shubman Gill is likely to miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning in Bengaluru later this week, as he is reportedly unwell. Gill had been appointed captain of the North Zone side.

Even if fit, the opener would not have played the tournament in full, with national duty in the Asia Cup — scheduled to start on September 9 in the UAE — taking precedence. The Duleep Trophy runs from August 28 to September 15, and Gill’s participation would have been restricted to only the opening fixture. North Zone is set to take on East Zone in the quarterfinal at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence ground in Bengaluru.

Gill returned earlier this month from a prolific tour of England, where he amassed 754 runs in five Tests of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. His form earned him a place in India’s Twenty20 squad for the Asia Cup, where he has also been named vice-captain.

At the time of announcing the North Zone squad, the selectors had already named Shubham Rohilla as Gill’s replacement. With Gill’s absence now certain, vice-captain Ankit Kumar will lead the side in the Duleep Trophy.
