India Test captain Shubman Gill said that the recently concluded tour of England, his first assignment as skipper, will be remembered by both teams for their performances.
“The Test series against England was a learning experience for me as captain, and we had some outstanding performances from both sides, which I am sure players from both sides will remember for a long time,” Gill said in an ICC release.
Gill scored 754 runs in 10 innings during the series, the second-highest by an Indian in a Test series. He also notched up four centuries, including a career-best 269, in the five games, the joint-most by an Indian batter, tying Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.
“The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England,” Gill added.
With his captaincy, Gill led India to its first victory at Edgbaston in Birmingham. He then got India to come from behind and level the series 2-2 in the final Test match at The Oval.
For his outstanding performance, Gill was named as the ICC Player of the Month for July.
“This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain.
“I would like to thank the jury for selecting me for this award and my teammates who have been with me during the course of this exciting series. I look forward to continuing my form in the season ahead and bringing more laurels for the country,” Gill added.
