‘Self-belief’ important since World Cup at home comes with added pressure: Yuvraj to Indian women’s team

Yuvraj Singh has been part of India’s two World Cup-winning squads — the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup at home.

The former India international admits that a World Cup at home comes with added pressure. And as Indian women’s cricket team gears up for an ODI World Cup, Yuvraj believes it’s important for the players to believe in themselves during crunch times.

“The fans are always wanting fours and sixes, or wickets. That’s the game. They come to watch; want to be entertained,” Yuvraj said on Monday.

“But the point is that if you want to win the World Cup, you have to assess the situation you are in. There will be times where they’re going to feel that pressure.”

According to him, handling the pressure will be the key. “There will be times when things are not going to go well and that’s the time when the experience, the self-belief, has to take over. The belief that I can be the player in this moment. I think every time you walk in the game, you have to believe that,” Yuvraj said.

The Indian team has never won an ICC title despite making the ODI World Cup final twice, and Yuvraj believes that the team needs to stay in the present and not look too far ahead.
