John Cena has been the WWE Champion since WrestleMania 41, and only two months in, it has felt like it’s lasted forever. Fans wanted to see a fun John Cena heel turn and one last run with the title, but even though we got both, the storyline has been uninspired. At some point, Cena will be defeated, which will lead to him seeing the error of his ways and turning babyface once more before he rides off into the sunset. Names like Cody Rhodes and CM Punk are out there as the ones to potentially pull it off, but as Raw showed, only the former R-Truth, Ron Killings, is the one who should beat the GOAT and become the new WWE Champion.

After making his WWE return, it looks like R-Truth might be dropping his comedic character, but here’s what made it work in the first place.
Who Will Beat John Cena For The WWE Championship?
Cody Rhodes Feels Like A Predictable Choice
- John Cena already beat Randy Orton with help from R-Truth.
- Cena will face CM Punk at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia.
- Cody Rhodes will probably get his revenge on John Cena and Travis Scott.
John Cena’s retirement tour will see him face some of his greatest rivals one last time. He already took on Randy Orton and beat him (with help from R-Truth), so Orton is not going to be the man to take his title. Another one of his greatest adversaries, CM Punk, stepped up to the plate on the June 9 Raw. Cena and Punk will now face each other at Night of Champions, but even though the latter is extremely over with fans, there’s no way he’s winning the gold and ending Cena’s last run in Saudi Arabia of all places.
That leaves Cody Rhodes. It seems like we’re in for a rematch on the giant stage of SummerSlam where the American Nightmare will not let his guard down this time. In the end, he’ll take down Cena, and probably Travis Scott too, to become the WWE Champion for a second time. Cody is the face of WWE, so that would make sense, but it’s also uninspired. How does Cody Rhodes winning get John Cena to see the light and come back from the dark side? No, only one man on the roster can accomplish that.

WWE’s Roster Is Older Than Ever, But There’s A Good Reason For That
If you look at WWE’s main event scene, they’re all pushing 40 or more, yet they are fitter and better in the ring than ever.
Ron Killings Showed On WWE Raw That His Time Is Now
R-Truth And John Cena Already Have A Major Storyline
- Fans were upset when TKO decided not to renew R-Truth’s contract.
- Outrage from WWE fans led to Truth returning at Money in the Bank to attack Cena.
- The comedy character is dead, and Ron Killings will now be a serious wrestler.
R-Truth has been the talk of wrestling the past week. When TKO decided they weren’t going to renew his contract, fans were livid. On top of that, reports spoke about WWE talent being upset because Truth is the most loved person on the roster. His dismissal was so heartbreaking that it felt like a death, but then came a powerful moment. WWE fans were so vocal about wanting R-Truth back that WWE had no choice but to realize their mistake and bring him back. We haven’t seen an incident like this since fan outrage helped Cody Rhodes get his WrestleMania 4 match returned to him.
When R-Truth showed up at Money in the Bank, the ovation was “Stone Cold” Steve Austin level. Two days later, on Raw, came another shocking moment, when Truth appeared out of nowhere for an impromptu promo on the commentary desk. There, he spoke about how R-Truth was too funny and too trusting, and that he was not a sideshow or a gimmick. To prove his point, Truth pulled out a pair of scissors and cut off his hair, before declaring that the truth had set him free and he is Ron Killings.
Part of why John Cena’s heel turn has felt so lackluster is that he has had no hero to play off of. If he’s Hulk Hogan in the nWo, there is no Sting. In this scenario, R-Truth is the closest we have to that, even though he and Sting are vastly different characters. Truth was the happy-go-lucky guy who believed in Cena no matter what and knew he could bring him back. However, now that Truth has been through so much and Ron Killings has been reborn, he should want more. The ultimate way to prove that he’s not a joke is to become the WWE Champion.

Ron “R-Truth” Killings: Age, Height, Relationship Status & More To Know
There is a lot that wrestling fans should know about R-Truth outside of his brilliant comedy work on WWE programming!
Ron Killings Winning The WWE Championship Would Be An Emotional Moment
It Could Be Similar To The Yes Movement And Kofi Mania
- Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston became WWE Champions because of fan support.
- Ron Killings was an NWA World Champion in TNA.
- Hulk Hogan got one last WWE Title run in 2002 when he turned babyface.
Now, you might be saying that there’s no way that Ron Killings, a guy who was just talking to Little Jimmy a few weeks ago, is going to win the prestigious WWE Championship. Come on, the guy’s a 53-year-old midcarder! But R-Truth winning is not at all far-fetched. He’s already on the path that Daniel Bryan and Kofi Kingston were with the Yes Movement and Kofi Mania. In both cases, these guys were the underdogs who weren’t supposed to be the WWE Champion, but fans fell in love with them so deeply and were so vocal about it that WWE had to listen and give them the title.
R-Truth is not just a comedy act. Ron Killings might be in his 50s, but he looks and moves like he’s 20 years younger, and the man is a former NWA World Champion from his days in TNA. Killings beating Cena, who’s in his late 40s and has lost more than a step, would not at all be unbelievable. Another similar example is when Hulk Hogan returned to WWE in 2002. Fans loved him so much that he left the nWo, became a babyface, and got one last WWE Championship run. That was a thank you from the company for everything he’s done. Ron Killings deserves the same.
That’s not saying that Killings needs to have a long run with the title, but he has earned the moment. What if Killings is the mystery name for the King of the Ring? Imagine him winning it, despite the odds, earning a shot at Cena at SummerSlam. There, Ron Killings becomes the WWE Champion in an unforgettable moment we’d never forget. He would not only prove himself to those who doubted him, but he’d prove himself to John Cena. The leader of the Cenation would be so impressed that, right then and there, he’d raise Killings’ hand and give him a hug. R-Truth wasn’t the one to bring John Cena back, but Ron Killings is. A WWE Championship win is how you get there.
