WWE will take fans behind the scenes like never before later this month when it drops a brand new series, WWE Unreal, exclusively on Netflix on July 29, 2025. The premise of the show has already sparked controversy due to just how big a peek behind the curtain fans are going to get, and now we’ve had our first proper look at what to expect via Unreal’s first trailer.
WWE Unreal Will Explain How John Cena’s Heel Turn Came To Be
Netflix shared the first trailer for Unreal on Thursday morning, which kicks off with Cody Rhodes telling the camera he feels terrible, but since his legs work, his spine’s okay, his neck isn’t hurt, and he doesn’t have a concussion, he has no right to complain. There’s a big focus on how, even though pro wrestling is predetermined, wrestling hurts. The close-up of the mark Bianca Belair’s braid left on Rhea Ripley, in particular, is hard to watch.

The Rock Originally Wanted Someone Else To Turn Heel Before Cena Did
Before turning John Cena heel, The Rock pitched another WWE star to join him on the dark side.
However, the part of the trailer that fans will almost certainly be most intrigued by is the focus on the John Cena heel turn. It looks like a significant chunk of the series may have been filmed while WWE was putting the pieces in place for what has gone down in history as one of the most shocking turns of all time. We’ll seemingly be hearing from Cena about it too, although no evidence yet that The Rock was also interviewed for Unreal.
An Inside Look At Cena’s Heel Turn, And A Deep Dive Into CM Punk’s Second Run In WWE
“For the first time ever, we’re going to show you how the story unfolded,” Triple H says during the trailer, right as a shot of him and The Rock speaking near the ring is being shown. Not just any shot, but seemingly a shot of The Rock telling Triple H exactly what he plans to do, presumably later that night, as he demonstrates a less dramatic version of the finger across the throat gesture he performed to signal to Cena that it’s time to turn on Rhodes.
The trailer then proceeds to show the heel turn, complete with fan reactions and Bruce Prichard asking, “What if we turn John Cena?” We then cut to a close-up of Cena being interviewed, asking whoever’s behind the camera, “Is that the answer you were looking for?”
The series won’t be entirely focused on Cena’s heel turn, of course. It looks like we’re about to hear a lot more about how Punk’s WWE return came to be, as well as how it’s been going for him behind the scenes since hell froze over and he signed a new deal with the company. WWE Unreal will stream exclusively on Netflix starting from July 29, 2025.
