Mbappe ruled out of France clash with Iceland due to injury

Kylian Mbappe will miss France’s World Cup qualifying match with Iceland on Monday due to injury, the French Football Federation (FFF) has confirmed.

Mbappe found the net in Les Blues’ 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan on Friday but limped off with less than 10 minutes remaining after suffering what appeared to be a recurrence of an ankle injury.

The FFF revealed the captain would not make the trip to Reykjavik and will instead return to his club side, Real Madrid.

“Kylian Mbappe suffered a blow to his right ankle and was forced to leave the match against Azerbaijan on Friday evening in Paris at the Parc des Princes,” the FFF said in a statement.

“Upon the French delegation’s return to Clairefontaine, the French team captain spoke with Didier Deschamps. He will not be able to play Monday in Reykjavik against Iceland.

“The national coach has confirmed his withdrawal. Kylian Mbappe has been released to his club and will not be replaced.”

In the absence of their talisman, France will be hoping to continue their perfect start to World Cup qualification against Iceland.

Deschamps’ team have picked up maximum points from their opening three Group D matches, following wins against Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan.

The French were runners-up at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they fell to Argentina on penalties in the final despite Mbappe netting a hat-trick.
