Bruno Fernandes insists he is happy at Manchester United and dismissed suggestions he rejected a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer due to concerns over missing out on playing at the World Cup.
Portugal midfielder Fernandes turned down lucrative contracts from Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad during the close season in order to remain at Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland tomorrow, the United skipper denied his motivation for staying in the Premier League was to prove to national team boss Roberto Martinez that he could still cut it at the highest level.
He said: “I didn’t close the door to the move to Saudi Arabia because of the World Cup, that was never in my head. I wanted to stay at Manchester United and the club wanted me to stay. Simply that.”
I am happy where I am – Fernandes
Speculation continues to link Fernandes with a move to the Pro League at the end of this season despite the fact he is under contract with United until 2027, with the option to extend by another year.
But the 31-year-old says he has not thought that far ahead with his sole focus on helping his country qualify for the World Cup next summer.
“It’s an impossible scenario to imagine, because there is nothing that has been talked about with me,” he added.
“When it was talked about with me, I spoke openly with you at a press conference before a Nations League game. I like to enjoy the moment, and the most important thing for me now is to represent the National Team, because it is a source of huge pride to be able to play tomorrow, and I still don’t know if I will play, let alone if I will leave Manchester United in a year.
“I’m happy where I am, otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed, but it’s something that doesn’t overly concern me.”
Portugal closing in on World Cup spot
Portugal will qualify for the World Cup next week if they win both games against Ireland and Hungary and Armenia fail to win either of their matches against the same countries.
Fernandes said: “Our goal is to beat Ireland. After being at a World Cup, we dream of reaching this one. In such a short tournament, it is possible to reach a final even with a few victories.
“I dreamed about this since I was little. I wanted to see Portugal at the top of the world. And so I will continue to dream until this goal is fulfilled.”
