Liverpool leave Chiesa out of 22-man squad with Ngumoha preferred

Liverpool have left Federico Chiesa out of their 22-man squad for this season’s Champions League.

The Reds begin their campaign in Europe’s premier club competition on September 17 with a home game against Atletico Madrid.

Clubs can name a maximum of 25 players in their List A squad for the Champions League, which must feature eight ‘home grown’ players, with a minimum of four required to ‘locally trained’ by the club for a minimum of three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

Italy international Chiesa has not made the cut, though, the former Juventus forward omitted in favour of teenager Rio Ngumoha.

Chiesa has struggled for regular minutes at Liverpool since moving to Anfield last year, and his chances to impress are likely to be increasingly limited following the Reds’ British record signing of Alexander Isak on transfer deadline day.

Ngumoha, meanwhile, has already added to the hype around him with a stunning 100th-minute winner in Liverpool’s thrilling 3-2 victory at Newcastle last month.

The 17-year-old may now get some opportunities to further his reputation on the biggest stage in continental football, with Liverpool also set to face Galatasaray, Eintracht Frankfurt, Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan, Marseille and Qarabag in the league phase.

Liverpool can name an unlimited number of players on their ‘List B’ squad, which is required to be submitted to UEFA by the eve of each fixture. According to UEFA regulations, a player can be registered on List B if he is “born on or after 1 January 2004 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year.”

Players aged 16 can be registered if they have been contracted with their club for the prior two years with no interruptions.

Liverpool List A squad: Alisson, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Wataru Endo, Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak, Curtis Jones, Milos Kerkez, Ibrahima Konate, Giovanni Leoni, Alexis Mac Allister, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Rio Ngumoha, Andrew Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, Virgil van Dijk, Florian Wirtz, Freddie Woodman.
