Marseille went ahead at Real Madrid before losing 2-1 in their first game of the league phase and are looking to beat PSG at home for the first time in 13 attempts.

Nayef Aguerd scored on his Marseille debut against Lorient but did not travel to Madrid because of concussion protocols, with the Morocco defender returning this time.

“His health comes first and then we’ll see,” said manager Roberto De Zerbi, adding that on-loan Bournemouth midfielder Hamed Traore will be out for “a few weeks”.

Marseille were immediately behind PSG almost throughout last season as the Parisiens breezed to the title, with a measure of revenge likely to be one of OM’s motivations after finishing 19 points behind the champions.

“We have a strong team with strong and experienced players,” the Italian added, reflecting on comprehensive defeats in the fixture in 2024/25.

“It’s different from last season. It won’t be my first Classique. We realise the importance of this match – it’s special, the whole of France is watching. These are the two best teams in France.

“We’re preparing for it with a lot of enthusiasm. There’s a gap between us and them, but I’d like to fight with them until the end.”

Marseille, who have alternated between wins and defeats in their first five games, will hope that 4-0 home win over Lorient last time out in the league prefaces more consistent form.
