Harry Kane scored another hat-trick to help Bayern Munich send a “statement” to the rest of the Bundesliga with a crushing win over RB Leipzig tonight.
Kane’s treble came inside 13 second-half minutes as Vincent Kompany’s men opened the defence of their domestic crown in hugely impressive fashion.
A poll this week revealed all 17 of the Bundesliga coaches believed Bayern would win the title and, on this evidence, it could be a long season for the other clubs even contemplating challenging the Bavarians’ dominance.
Kane: Bayern sent a statement
Kane said: “We wanted to send a statement from the first game at home and that’s what we did today. We performed at a very high level and were efficient. We won 6-0 so we can’t complain. After half time we were 3-0 up, I said to myself that I need to get on the scoresheet.”
It was a night to forget for new Leipzig boss Ole Werner, whose team were swept aside with contempt.
The visitors held their own for the first 27 minutes before Bayern finally clicked with Michael Olise sending a powerful strike into the far corner.
It was 2-0 five minutes later as Serge Gnabry picked out Luis Diaz and the former Liverpool forward netted his first Bundesliga goal with a finish that flew in via the underside of the cross bar.
Gnabry then teed up Olise for his second as Bayern went into half-time three goals to the good.
Kane then took centre stage.
The England captain netted his first after cutting inside his marker before firing past Peter Gulacsi. His second came shortly after Leipzig had a goal ruled out for offside, the former Tottenham hero whipping in a shot from the edge of the box.
And he completed his hat-trick – his eighth for Bayern – slotting home after Leipzig were unable to prevent centre-half Kim Min-jae from carrying the ball for 50 yards before laying it off for Kane.
Bayern boss Kompany cool despite win
Despite the resounding win, Kompany refused to get carried away.
Asked if it was the perfect performance from his side, the Belgian said: “No, I just told the players in the dressing room that there were three things we can do better, but I’ll keep that for the dressing room.
“We showed energy and joy on the pitch. It was a very good first game at Allianz Arena. The basis was there, but it’s only one game. It’s not six points, only three. There were many topics before the game, but we gave the answer on the pitch. We keep going.”
