16The number of innings Yashasvi Jaiswal took to reach 1000 Test runs against England — in the first innings in Manchester on 23 July 2025, equalling the record held by Australian Arthur Morris in July 1948 in Leeds. This effort by him is the quickest by any opening batter against England and joint-second fastest by an Indian against the same opponent. Meanwhile, Jaiswal, at 23 years and 207 days, is now the youngest opener to reach 1,000 Test runs against England. Former Australian opener Michael Slater was 24 years, 349 days when he reached his milestone on 5 February 1995 at the WACA, Perth. Overall, Jaiswal is the second youngest batter after Don Bradman (21 years, 318 days) to cross 1000 runs against England in Tests.

38The number of sixes hit by Rishabh Pant against England in Tests is just one short of the record number of sixes hit by Ben Stokes against Australia. Only four batters in Test history have the distinction of hitting 30 or more sixes against a particular opponent, with Stokes doing so against two opponents — Australia and South Africa.

3The number of instances in Test cricket where 100+ runs partnerships were recorded for the third wicket after the first two wickets fell without a run on the board. The 188-run stand between K. L. Rahul and Shubman Gill in the second innings in Manchester is the latest such instance and is also the highest stand under these circumstances (see Table 1). The second table below lists the three occasions (India has done it twice) when Test sides managed to reach totals of 400 or more after losing their first two wickets for zero.

5The number of occasions when a Test captain achieved the rare feat of registering a three-figure score and claiming a five-wicket haul in a Test match. Ben Stokes, in the Manchester Test, became the latest to join this small group of captains in Test cricket history. As a player, Stokes also became the fourth Englishman after Tony Greig, Ian Botham (who did it four times) and Gus Atkinson. Meanwhile, Stokes has become the seventh player to achieve this all-rounder’s double against India after West Indians Collie Smith and Garry Sobers, New Zealander Bruce Taylor (on his Test debut), Englishman Ian Botham, Pakistani Imran Khan and West Indian Roston Chase.

3The number of players with 7000-plus runs and 200-plus wickets in their Test career. Ben Stokes, during his knock of 141 against India in Manchester, when he crossed 7000 Test runs, emulated West Indian Garry Sobers and South African Jacques Kallis. For the record, Sobers (in 80 Tests) reached this double in the fewest number of matches, while Kallis, at 30 years, 201 days, is the youngest.

4The number of instances in Test cricket where India, after conceding a first innings lead of 300-plus, polished off the deficit to draw the match, which was its second such fightback — at Manchester. In 1936, 89 years ago, India, under almost similar circumstances, managed to save the Test.

10The number of Test matches India has played at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester since its first in 1936. This is its most at a venue, anywhere, without a single victory. In terms of Test matches played, Manchester is high on the list. However, the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown is the worst in terms of defeats — India having recorded no wins and lost seven out of its nine Tests.
