Rocky Flintoff and captain Hamza Shaikh led England’s reply before India Under-19s bounced back to not allow either of the two a century during the second day of the first Youth Test at Beckenham on Sunday.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi had Shaikh caught at 84 while Deepesh Devendran struck Flintoff in front seven runs short of his ton. In between, Vihaan Malhotra got Ben Meyes leg before as England ended the day at five for 230, trailing India by 310 runs.
Henil Patel penetrated got the better of both England openers – Archie Vaughan and Jaydn Denly – before Shaikh and Flintoff added 154 runs for the third wicket.
However, it was the left-arm spin of Suryavanshi that gave a much-needed breakthrough as India finished the day on top having half of the England batters back in the hut.
Earlier, India started the day at seven for 450 and added 90 runs more thanks to RS Ambrish (70 off 124 balls) and Henil’s (38 off 81) late order contribution.
Ralphie Albert and Alex Green finished with three wickets each while Vaughan and Jack Home bagged two apiece.
