Former Manchester United star trains with Malmo while he searches for a new club

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is training with Malmo while he searches for a new club.

The 33-year-old left United at the end of last season after his contract expired and, having rejected the chance to join ambitious Championship club Wrexham, is still seeking the right opportunity.

In the meantime, he has hooked up with Swedish champions Malmo in a bid to stay sharp.

It’s a bit of fun – Malmo

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson told Gasetten: “It’s a bit of fun. He’s a nice player and a nice guy. We want to have a good level in our training and he can certainly help with that as well as being a bit of an inspiration [to the other players].”

Malmo are without a fixture this weekend due to the international break but then all focus turns to the clash with Elfsborg when club football resumes.

Andersson explained: “Friday, Saturday and Sunday are off so there are no training sessions. Then we focus on our match against Elfsborg next week, but if he is in for some sessions at the beginning of next week, if he doesn’t find a club, it might not hurt.

“But the most important thing for us is that we focus on our matches. But he is obviously a good player so it is not that he will ruin anything. Quite the opposite.”

Complications if Eriksen stays with Malmo

If Malmo do firm up their interest with an offer to the Dane, then they may have to seek special dispensation to play him in the Allsvenskan with the registration period now closed. He could not play in the Europa League either.

Andersson added: “It’s not something I’ve thought about, how he could fit in with us. Right now we’re helping him and it’s a fun and inspiring thing for our players.”

Eriksen was equally non-committal when asked about whether he would like to join Malmo, stating: “I can only say that I’m training.”

Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 four years ago, started out at Ajax before spells at Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford before moving to Old Trafford in 2022.
