India pacer Mohammed Siraj was seen wearing a white headband during the final session of the second day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval in London on Friday.
The headband is a tribute to former England batter Graham Thorpe, who passed away last year in August after being struck by a train at a railway station. A coroner had ruled Thorpe’s death as a suicide.
The headbands bore a silhouette of Thorpe and his initials.
Ahead of the second day’s play, his family, friends, and colleagues observed ‘A Day for Thorpey’ at The Oval. Thorpe’s wife, Amanda, and daughter, Emma, were present to ring the bell ahead of the second day’s action.
Thorpe played 100 Test matches and 82 One-Day Internationals for England between 1993 and 2005. The left-hander scored 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 and amassed 2,380 ODI runs in 82 games.
Siraj had a successful outing with the ball on Friday. He picked four wickets for 86 runs in 16.2 overs and helped India restrict England to 247 after the visitor was bowled out for 224 earlier in the day.
