The AEW Forbidden Door pay-per-view is shaping up to be a memorable event. During this past Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite, Adam Copeland and Christian Cage reunited, and now, for the first time in over a decade, the two are teaming up again for Forbidden Door.
Who Will The Iconic Duo Face At Forbidden Door?
It was announced on Wednesday that Cope and Christian Cage will face Kip Sabian and Nick Wayne on Sunday, August 24, at Forbidden Door in London, England. So how did this all come together?
When Cope first came to AEW, Christian was a heel and didn’t want to take up his offer to reunite at that time. Now that Christian’s “son” Nick Wayne and the Patriarchy have turned on its leader, Christian needs a friend. Granted, Cope was the first one to come to Christian’s aid about a month ago at the All In PPV. Before Wayne and Sabian could hit him with a conchairto, Cope rescued him.
Now this week, Christian has returned the favor. After FTR got involved in the Cope vs. Stokely Hathaway match, Christian came down to make the save. The two hugged it out, though Christian still looked like his Stoic self. They also fended off an attack from Sabian and Wayne. The crowd loved the reunion, so naturally, a match had to be booked ASAP.
A Look Back At Their WWE Career
The duo will be teaming for the first time in 14 years. The last time fans saw Cope, then known as Edge, and Christian in a WWE ring teaming together on TV was the March 28, 2011, episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, where they defeated former WWE Stars Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay.
The two would wrestle together one more time after that, in a dark match on the April 5, 2011, episode of Friday Night SmackDown. There, they teamed with Rey Mysterio, The Big Show, and Triple H in a match against Del Rio and The Corre (former WWE stars Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel & current WWE commentator Wade Barrett).
Those who grew up in the Attitude Era have fond memories of Edge and Christian matches. They were seven-time WWE World Tag Team Champions and were one of the three teams to be part of the first-ever TLC match, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary at SummerSlam.
In their early days, in 1998, they were part of the Gothic stable The Brood with former WWE star Gangrel. Eventually, the duo branched off on their own, where they had some of the most intense feuds with The Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz. 2001 would be the year they would break up, with Christian turning on Edge and joining the Alliance, which was ECW/WCW vs. WWE. Oddly enough, Christian was in neither of those promotions.
Anyway, they would find their own singles success, especially Edge, who ended up retiring from WWE in 2011 as a 7-time WWE Heavyweight Champion. The two would reunite for only a few matches in 2005 and then in 2011. Now a new group of fans can see the iconic duo, though a little older and beaten down, but still “reek of awesomeness.”
