Patrick Mahomes is tired of being a hard-luck loser. Mahomes and the the Kansas City Chiefs have gone from being the masters of the one-score win to the team that just can’t get the job done.
The Chiefs looked like they had secured their third win of the season when Mahomes led a late touchdown drive that put them ahead against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night. But Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence ran in for a one-yard touchdown in the final minute to deny Kansas City and condemn them to their third one-score defeat of the season.
It is a remarkable change in fortunes after Andy Reid’s team won a record 11 one-score games last season.
“Obviously, it sucks,” Mahomes said following the 31-28 loss. “You let a game slip away. It still sucks whenever you get a lead and you’re not able to hold it.
“We have the guys and we’ve executed at certain points in games and looked really good, but we crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes.
“We’ve done that to ourselves all season long. It’s been one guy here or there. In this league, it’s so close that those [moments] change games.
“We’ve got to be better. We’ve lost too many games already.”
They won’t find it easy to get back on track against a Lions team that sit pretty with a 4-1 record.
They also won on their last visit to Arrowhead, a 21-20 season-opening win in 2023 that coach Dan Campbell felt was a pivotal moment in the development of his team.
“That was big. I felt like that kind of kicked our season off. Guys really believed we could go out there and win and played their tails off,” Campbell said

The Lions are awkward opposition at this stage of the season for a Chiefs team in desperate need of wins. The pressure is off a little bit for Detroit and we think that makes them dangerous.
