Memphis Depay scored twice against Lithuania in World Cup qualifying to break the all-time scoring record for The Netherlands, his second restoring their advantage after Ronald Koeman’s men remarkably surrendered a 2-0 lead.
Depay put Netherlands in front in the 11th minute with an instinctive first-time finish from Cody Gakpo’s left-wing cross.
That marked his 51st goal for the Orange as he surpassed Robin van Persie (50) to claim the outright goalscoring record for his country.
Quinten Timber doubled the lead for the Dutch 22 minutes later, but any thought of the game being put to bed by that goal was erased by a stunning comeback from the hosts in Kaunas.
Two goals in the space of 10 minutes drew Lithuania level, Gvidas Gineitis having the deficit with a 36th-minute volley, before Edvinas Girdvainis headed in the equaliser seven minutes later.
But normal service was resumed by Depay as he rose to head into the bottom-right corner from Denzel Dumfries’ right-wing delivery in the 64th minute.
