CSK issues clarification on Dewald Brevis signing during IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday issued a notification stating that its signing of Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement during the 2025 season complied with the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) regulations.

“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” the five-time champion said in the statement.

Brevis was unsold during the mega auction in Saudi Arabia before signing with CSK for Rs. 2.2 crore as an injury replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh. However, speculation over CSK breaching the set rules began on the internet after R. Ashwin suggested that CSK had paid “extra” and beaten multiple teams to sign the Proteas player.

“I heard two-three teams were in talks with him, but they weren’t willing to pay extra, so negotiations fell through,” Ashwin had said.

In its statement, CSK cited clause 6.6 of the IPL Regulations 2025-27, which states: “A replacement player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season.

“If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract.”

Brevis was an instant hit with the side, scoring 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of more than 180. During the T20I series against Australia this week, Brevis impressed for the Proteas, smashing a 41-ball century in the second game before following it up with a 26-ball 53 in the third game.
