Brock Lesnar’s New WWE Contract: Details and Absence Explanation

Summary

  • Brock Lesnar signed a new limited-date WWE contract after being a free agent for months.
  • He returned by attacking John Cena at SummerSlam; match vs Cena set for Wrestlepalooza Sept 20.
  • He was off TV amid Janel Grant’s lawsuit; WWE cleared his return despite allegations.

Brock Lesnar has a new contract with WWE. In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported on Lesnar’s new contract while also giving an insight into his two-year absence with WWE.

Brock Lesnar Was A Free Agent For Months

As per Meltzer, Lesnar has signed a new contract with limited dates. It was also reported that Lesnar was still getting paid until a few months before the new deal was signed. So, for a few months, the WWE Champion was a free agent. He said:

“A correction regarding Brock Lesnar. Lesnar actually just signed a new contract to return. He was getting paid on his prior contract long after they stopped using him, but that deal did expire and he actually was a free agent for months until the new deal was signed. They couldn’t extend the prior deal due to injury like with others because he wasn’t injured and it was their choice not to use him.”

Lesnar made his return after two years by attacking John Cena at the end of SummerSlam. It was right after Cena lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes. He hasn’t done anything since, but Cena is set to get his revenge on Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza on September 20. Wrestlepalooza is set to be the first WWE premium live event for the new ESPN DTC service. Meltzer also noted that Lesnar’s match against Cena will probably be revealed during this Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown.

Lesnar was removed from the WWE 2K24 game and was also removed as a planned entrant for the 2024 Royal Rumble due to a lawsuit filed by former WWE Employee Janel Grant. The lawsuit was filed in January 2024, and it was at that time that WWE took action.

In the lawsuit, Grant accused the former WWE CEO Vince McMahon of “sex trafficking, physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, and negligence” and had just referred to Lesnar as the “star wrestler.” It wasn’t until February 2025 that Grant identified Lesnar in an amended complaint filed in the U.S. District Court. Grant has claimed that McMahon offered her up for sex in 2021 as an “incentive” for Lesnar to re-sign with the promotion. It was WWE’s legal team that said it was okay for Lesnar to return to the company. The lawsuit is still pending.

Prior to this year’s SummerSlam, the last time Lesnar was in the ring was against Cody Rhodes. It was at the 2023 SummerSlam PLE, and Rhodes ended up defeating him in the match.
