BCCI AGM to be held on September 28; election for president’s post on top of agenda

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold its 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on September 28.

According to protocol, notices have been issued to all the affiliated member units, indicating that elections, if required, for all the positions will be held on the same day.

With the National Sports Act not formally implemented yet, the Board will continue to follow the Lodha Committee guidelines, which restrict the age-limit for the office-bearers to 70 years.

However, it is unlikely that there would be any elections for any of the positions. While secretary Devajit Saikia, treasurer Baltej Singh Bhatia and joint secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai are likely to continue, there could be a new president. Back in 2019, Sourav Ganguly (East Zone) became the president of the Board, before Roger Binny from South Zone succeeded him.

There’s a buzz that the Board officials have informally reached out to a couple of former India cricketers from the West Zone as possible presidential candidates. However, so far, there seems to be no decision on whether to follow the tradition and project a former cricketer as the successor of Binny, or promote the incumbent vice-president Rajiv Shukla for now as the president. Binny had to relinquish his post as the president of the BCCI after he turned 70 on July 19, and in his absence, Shukla chaired the apex council meeting that was held last week.

According to the agenda of the AGM, the new committee will be formed, along with constituting a new IPL Governing Council, and the Women’s Premier League panel.

The AGM is scheduled on the same day as that of the Asia Cup final, which means that even if India makes the summit clash, the BCCI office-bearers could give the continental event a miss. The Asian Cricket Council is currently headed by Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the head of Pakistan Cricket Board.
