5 WWE SmackDown Stars Who Might Not Survive The Next Round Of Cuts

Another post-WrestleMania season, another round of budget cuts. Which WWE SmackDown star is on the hot seat?

UPDATE: 2025/05/16 15:30 EST BY PATRICK MOCELLA

WWE Has Announced A Card For Tonight

Three matches have been announced for tonight’s episode of Smackdown.

WWE Women’s Championship: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Nia Jax

Prediction: Tiffany Stratton Will Retain Her Championship

Nia Jax won a number one contender’s match last week over Jade Cargill. In tonight’s SmackDown main event, the current WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton has to defend her belt against the former champion Jax.

As Jax hasn’t had much storyline progression since her post-WrestleMania return, this main event largely feels like a chance for Stratton to notch another title defense under her belt. Expect Stratton to win the match and continue her reign.

Money In The Bank Qualifier: Chelsea Green vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Michin

Prediction: Chelsea Green Will Move On To The Money In The Bank PLE

As announced by Smackdown General Manager Nick Aldis on X, the first women’s qualifying match for Money In The Bank is happening tonight as Chelsea Green, Alexa Bliss and Michin will tangle for a shot at the briefcase which guarantees a title opportunity.

When Green lost her United States Championship shockingly to Zelina Vega weeks ago, fans speculated that it was grooming Green to win the Women’s briefcase. I’d have to agree with that speculation, so Green should pull off the win tonight.

Money In The Bank Qualifier: Solo Sikoa Vs. Jimmy Uso Vs. Rey Fenix

Prediction: Rey Fenix Would Excel In A Money In The Bank Match

For the men’s triple threat qualifier for Money In The Bank, we have two Samoan brothers and one Lucha Bro tangling for a spot in the match. At Backlash this past Saturday, Sikoa called in an assist from the debuting Jeff Cobb to help Jacob Fatu retain his United States Championship.

Jimmy Uso has seen his momentum stall on Smackdown while Fenix has only lost one singles match in his WWE career so far. It would be incredible to see what Fenix can do in a Money In The Bank match, so expect WWE to book him to win tonight.

What Else Is On Smackdown Tonight?

  • John Cena retained his WWE Undisputed Championship at WWE Backlash, but with an unexpected assist from R-Truth. Tonight, Wade Barrett has a sit-down interview with R-Truth to discuss his actions. This could be the most serious R-Truth segment in years.
  • Carmelo Hayes will be taking on Aleister Black in a rematch from last week.
  • Fraxiom will be facing off against #DIY in a tag team match.
  • Jeff Cobb made his presence felt at WWE Backlash as he debuted to assist Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu, but there was clearly some tension between Cobb and Fatu. This could turn ugly very quickly.
  • Zelina Vega has expressed a desire to be a fighting champion in an interview with Good Karma Wrestling this week. Perhaps she will get a chance to do so tonight on Smackdown.

Every WWE show moved networks in the past year. NXT was a big success for the USA Network on Tuesday nights, but they made the switch to the CW, which brought a new look to the developmental show.

WWE Is Teasing How John Cena’s WWE Championship Reign Might End

After attacking R-Truth after Backlash, it might be John Cena’s biggest fan who ends his WWE Championship run.

In 2019, SmackDown made its own big move, going from cable to network TV on FOX. This led to a huge increase in ratings, thanks in part as well to The Bloodline story, but with FOX not getting the ad revenue they hoped for, they let the Friday night show go. On September 13 2024, it went back to the USA Network
